Introduction
We are looking at three high-end proposals launched between 2024 and 2025 that represent the best of each manufacturer in robot vacuum cleaners with multifunctional base. The Dreame L40 Ultra AE arrives in 2025 with a clear commitment to artificial intelligence and total autonomy. The Roborock Qrevo Edge S5A, presented in 2024, maintains the philosophy of reliability and efficiency that characterises the leading brand in the sector. The Xiaomi Robot Vacuum 5, also from 2025, seeks a balance between raw power and compact design.
All three models incorporate a complete multifunctional base with auto-emptying, washing and drying of mops with hot water and air. They are designed for users seeking maximum automation in medium or large homes, especially when there are pets or a need for frequent mopping.
Power and Suction
The Xiaomi Robot Vacuum 5 leads in suction power with 20,000 Pa, followed by the Dreame L40 Ultra AE with 19,000 Pa and the Roborock Qrevo Edge S5A with 18,500 Pa. In practice, these differences are minimal on hard floors, but may be noticeable when working on thick carpets or in homes with long-haired pets.
All three units feature anti-tangle main brushes. The Dreame and Xiaomi opt for the TriCut 3.0 system, which combines bristles with blades to cut tangled hair. The Roborock uses its DuoDivide Antienredos technology, which pushes hair towards the central gap to facilitate direct suction.
A relevant difference: the Dreame L40 Ultra AE can raise its main brush during mopping. This prevents it from getting unnecessarily wet and allows for cleaner mopping without dragging dirt from the brush. The other two models keep the brush fixed.
As for the side brush, the Roborock and Xiaomi incorporate an extendable design to better reach corners, as well as anti-tangle technology. The Dreame does without these functions on the side brush, which may be a disadvantage in tricky corners and require more maintenance if there is hair.
Mopping
All three robots mop with a dual rotating mop system and feature edge extension to reach the edges. The Dreame also adds the Roboswing system, which performs an oscillating movement to get the mop under furniture or overhangs.
Mop lifting marks notable differences. The Xiaomi Robot Vacuum 5 achieves 15 mm of lift, sufficient to travel over medium-thickness carpets without wetting them. The Dreame stays at 10.5 mm and the Roborock at 10 mm. If you have carpets at home, this difference is worth considering.
In dirt detection, the Dreame and Roborock incorporate sensors both on the mops and on the floor to go over dirtier areas or rewash the mops when necessary. The Xiaomi lacks this function, which means more uniform but less adaptive mopping.
All three wash the mops with hot water in the base and dry them with hot air. Only the Dreame L40 Ultra AE includes a detergent tank in the base, which dispenses product during mop washing. This improves hygiene and reduces manual maintenance. The Roborock and Xiaomi require manually adding detergent to the clean water tank if you wish to use it.
Navigation System
The Dreame features a conventional LiDAR turret, whilst the Roborock also uses a LiDAR turret and the Xiaomi opts for a retractable LiDAR that reduces the overall height of the robot.
The big difference lies in artificial intelligence. The Dreame L40 Ultra AE integrates a front camera with AI capable of recognising up to 120 different types of obstacles, including pets. Additionally, it allows remote access to the camera for surveillance and features a front LED for night vision. These functions are completely absent in the Roborock and Xiaomi.
The Dreame and Xiaomi incorporate a front 3D laser sensor for real-time obstacle detection. The Roborock does without this additional sensor, although its navigation system remains very precise thanks to its RR Mason 11.0 algorithm, for which no specific equivalents are specified in the other models.
For homes with pets, the Dreame offers clear advantages by identifying and intelligently avoiding them, as well as allowing you to locate them via the camera.
Autonomy and Battery
All three robots feature 5,200 mAh batteries. The Roborock Qrevo Edge S5A declares 180 minutes of autonomy, the Xiaomi Robot Vacuum 5 reaches 140 minutes. The Dreame does not specify exact duration.
In large homes, those extra 40 minutes from the Roborock can make the difference between completing cleaning in a single run or needing an intermediate recharge. For flats up to 120-150 m², any of the three offers sufficient autonomy.
Smart Functions
All three models overcome obstacles up to 20 mm in height, which allows them to easily cross transitions between rooms, thin carpets or small level changes.
The Dreame incorporates its CleanGenius system for AI-based intelligent cleaning, the Roborock uses SmartPlan and the Xiaomi also integrates intelligent cleaning. These functions adjust power and cleaning pattern according to floor type and detected dirt level.
All three are compatible with external voice assistants such as Alexa or Google Home, facilitating voice control.
Multifunctional Cleaning Base
All three bases perform auto-emptying of the dust bin, washing of mops with hot water and drying with hot air. All incorporate self-cleaning of the washing tray, although the Dreame and Roborock specify that it is second generation (2.0), whilst the Xiaomi simply confirms having it.
Dust bag capacity varies: the Dreame offers 3.2 litres, the Roborock 2.7 litres and the Xiaomi 2.5 litres. Greater capacity means fewer bag changes, especially relevant with pets.
In water tanks, the Dreame leads with 4.5 litres of clean water and 4 litres of dirty water. The Roborock features 4 and 3.5 litres respectively. The Xiaomi comes in at 4 and 3.8 litres. For large homes or frequent mopping, these extra litres from the Dreame reduce the need to refill water.
Only the Dreame L40 Ultra AE offers an optional plumbing connection kit, which must be purchased separately. It allows you to connect the base directly to the water supply and drainage, completely eliminating tank maintenance. It is an interesting option for permanent installations, although it requires minor works.
Dimensions
The diameter is practically identical: 350 mm on the Dreame and Xiaomi, 352 mm on the Roborock. The real difference is in height.
The Xiaomi Robot Vacuum 5 measures only 88 mm tall, which allows it to slip under low furniture where the other two cannot reach. The Dreame reaches 97 mm and the Roborock 98 mm. If you have sofas or beds with little clearance, the Xiaomi has a clear advantage.
The bases occupy similar spaces. The Dreame and Roborock measure 340 mm wide, the Xiaomi 360 mm. In height, the Dreame is the tallest at 590.5 mm, followed by the Xiaomi at 572 mm and the Roborock at 521 mm. In depth, the Roborock needs 487 mm, the Xiaomi 470 mm and the Dreame 456.7 mm.
Real-World User Experience
For large homes, the Roborock Qrevo Edge S5A offers the best declared autonomy with 180 minutes, along with sufficient water tanks and a compact base in height. Its DuoDivide system works especially well in homes with pets thanks to the anti-tangle design of the side brush.
If the house has low furniture, the Xiaomi Robot Vacuum 5 becomes the most practical option thanks to its 88 mm height. Additionally, its 15 mm mop lift better protects carpets. The 20,000 Pa power is ideal for thick carpets or abundant pet hair.
The Dreame L40 Ultra AE stands out in homes with pets for its AI camera that recognises and avoids them, as well as remote access to locate them. The integrated detergent tank and larger dust bag capacity (3.2 L) reduce maintenance. The main brush lift during mopping guarantees more hygienic results.
On hard floors without carpets, all three offer excellent results. The Dreame and Roborock add dirt detection to adapt mopping, something that can be noticeable in kitchens or high-traffic areas.
Conclusion: Which One to Choose?
